You used to carry the tree Unwillingly just for me I used to cover it with hearts Made of clear glass And a felted robin That I’d since lost in the battle Though I managed to save My favourite beaded apple Last night a stranger carried my tree So happily, brought it here He said he fights fires and saved a life But my fire had long gone out And I don’t need saving from being blue So, I said “thank you and here’s some wine But that is all I can give to you.” And I smiled and said goodbye I won’t have Christmas of blue this year It will be red and green and white Here in my castle above a stream I have my tree and it’s burning bright Burning bright

On our way from Stockholm It started to snow And you said it was like Christmas But you were wrong It wasn’t like Christmas at all By the time we got to Oslo The snow was gone And we got lost The beds were small But we felt so young It was just like Christmas

about

With 'Last Night a Stranger Carried My Tree,' Misha Chylkova’s newest digital release on Gare Du Nord Records, out on December 1, 2023, she challenges the garish cheerfulness usually associated with ‘the Christmas song.’ Instead of forcing the listener to feel happy in this highly accelerated time of year—a problematic suggestion insistently relayed on every corner from the moment Halloween is over—this song encourages us to slow down and get lost in pensive, reverbed soundscapes instead. Faithful to her musical style, she injects a good dose of melancholy and reflection. The single also includes a B-side—her cover of Low’s 'Just Like Christmas.' The two songs convey a dream-like atmosphere, both in a slightly different yet complementary way.
